NOLA Times-Picayune: LeBlanc 'blunt but frequently hilarious'

Spike sounds off: The critic had his say, now the filmmaker gets his.

Dave Walker, New Orleans Times-Picayune, August 22, 2006 writes a follow-up to his orginal review and includes this anecdote:
Phyllis Montana LeBlanc, one of the 100-plus witnesses interviewed by Lee, has been cited in many reviews as one of Levees' stars.

LeBlanc, a former eastern New Orleans resident Lee interviewed in her FEMA trailer, is blunt but frequently hilarious in recounting her storm story.

At Thursday's morning-after news conference, a reporter asked LeBlanc about her reaction to sudden stardom.

LeBlanc said she'd awoken that morning to her husband's request for breakfast.

"I'm like, 'I'm a star,' " she said. "He's like, 'Hell no, do what you do, fix breakfast.'

"I fixed his breakfast."

I thought this film was an elegy made by a master. It was as good as Ken Burns's The Civil War. I thought it was interesting that Terrence Blanchard used a string quartet and string orchestra to express grief in the city of jazz, in his haunting original score. But the soul of this film was the fabulous Phyllis Montana LeBlanc. Someone should give her a contract to do her own radio show, to be sure. She was beautiful. I loved her, and I hope she gets her family back. Her husband should fix her breakfast. She is a star.

I said almost the rxact same thing on my regular blog: Somebody ought to offer her a contract to host her own talk show on Air America.

Phyllis is my hero and I dedicated my morning 2.5 mile run to her today. Not only is she my hero, but the doctor from Mississippi who told Dick Cheney to go "f&*k" himself is also a hero of mine.
This was an excellent documentary that I will watch again, for a third time.

I just finished watching When the Levees Broke on DVD. Excellent. Yes, Phyllis Montana LeBlanc was remarkable. A POET! An artist in her own right. I'd like to see some of her work published. I'd like to see her able to pick and choose between radio show or talk show host, regular appearances in follow up documentaries, publishing contracts, whatever she wants to do with that spirit, fire.. her gift for story-telling. And yes, I'd want to see her family reunited. I want to thank her.
